Monica Farrier formerly worked in senior care communities,
including a skilled nursing facility, continuing care retirement
community (CCRC), and communities offering independent
and assisted living and memory care. Recognizing the need
for housing and care chosen based on the best interests of
families, she founded Eldercare Scout in early 2009. She
applies an insider's knowledge in her service to older adults,
their families and caregivers.
Her work is also informed by years of experience in the spa
and wellness fields as a health writer, educator, and
practitioner serving clients or all ages. She seeks and
supports care models that emphasize the health of body,
mind, and spirit, preserving dignity and empowering
individuals, regardless of age or physical or cognitive
limitations. She truly strives to provide her clients with
"resources for optimal senior living."
As a "baby boomer" herself, Monica understands the
concerns of other working adults who are caring for aging
parents. Recognizing that not all family members may agree
about what is best for their loved ones, she recently
introduced mediation services to assist families in reaching
consensus and making peace with their choices.
For those choosing to make a change in their housing and/or care arrangements, Monica provides referrals to residential care homes and providers. She regularly visits care communities and evaluates each according to the same high standards she would expect when looking on behalf of her own family members. She also welcomes feedback from seniors and their families and considers this information when referring others. Her goal is to help families make informed choices about housing and care, saving them valuable time and effort while reducing stress and worry.
Monica's broad education includes training in many specialties related to senior care. She is a mediator and member of the Association for Dispute Resolution of Northern California and a California licensed real estate salesperson. She is also an active member of the American Massage Therapy Association and advocates for massage and appropriate complementary therapies for older adults, which can reduce pain and depression and improve quality of life. Locally, she is a member of Senior Roundtable, The Alameda Business Association and The Women's Networking Alliance, and has taught courses at Foothill College and San Jose City College. She also enjoys her work as a volunteer reader for the nonprofit Books Aloud, which provides audio books for individuals with low vision.
Monica is fortunate to enjoy excellent working relationships with several professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. These include:
